The video documenting the encounter came from creator James (@jamesisnotverynice) in San Antonio, Texas. It has received an incredible 9 million views since it was posted on TikTok on Saturday.

He begins by informing his audience: “Just letting you all know that you cannot sneak into a Tesla. It doesn’t work for you.”

Then he shares the story: A Tesla driver is coming to his right, merging onto a highway with heavy traffic. He tries to merge in front of James, but there’s no room. After nearly hitting James’ car, he merges behind James and expresses his displeasure with a finger gesture favored by angry drivers.

“Now he rides my ass and throws me in the mirror, just constantly,” reports James. “And then I remember…Teslas have one of the most sensitive auto-braking features of all cars.”

He continues, “So I’m starting to have a little fun with him. I see him in the mirror. He advances. I hit the brakes a little.”

The action causes the Tesla driver’s car to stop automatically, further infuriating that driver.

“I go a little bit further, I hit the brakes a little bit and he can’t get past because it’s bumper to bumper,” James reports. “He can’t move. He’s stuck behind me in his car.”

“I’ve never enjoyed bumper to bumper traffic in my life until today,” he added. “I mean, this was the most fun I’ve ever had in my car. I died laughing for 20 minutes.”

How the Tesla braking system works

right Model 3 online user manual“When a collision is deemed unavoidable, automatic emergency braking is designed to apply the brakes to reduce the vehicle’s speed and therefore the severity of the impact. The amount of speed that is reduced depends on many factors, including driving speed and the environment.”

It adds: “When Automatic Emergency Braking applies the brakes, the touch screen displays a visual warning and sounds a buzzer. You may also notice a sudden downward movement of the brake pedal. The brake lights come on to alert other road users that you are slowing down.”

The viewers are amused

James’ TikTok visitors admired his initiative.

“LMAO this was my therapy for the day,” said one.

“Now that’s my kind of petty,” said another.

“Literally had about the same interaction,” someone else reported. “Except the Tesla guy sped up and almost took out 4 merging cars and I saw automatic brakes going at 90 mph.”

Even someone on the other side of the equation appreciated the information.

“I tried to wander the road in a Polestar,” confessed one. “I was embarrassed to say the least. Never again.”
