Durham police officers to get specialist domestic abuse training

The training program covers topics such as coercive and controlling behaviour, understanding perpetrators, digital domestic abuse, as well as helping male and elderly victims.

Ellen Miller, the charity’s chief executive, said the course was a cultural change program that was created with survivors of abuse.

“Allowing first responders to provide the right support to the victim at the right time leads to better outcomes and restores trust between survivors and police officers,” she said.

She added that she wanted to ensure that the police and criminal justice response to domestic abuse was “as good as it could be”.
