Trump threatens to impose new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China on his first day in office

NEW YORKPresident-elect Donald Trump threatened to implement significant new rates on Mexico, Canada and China immediately after taking office as part of his strategy to tackle illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

If passed, the tariffs could lead to a spike in prices for a wide range of products, from gasoline to cars. The US, the world’s largest importer, relies heavily on Mexico, China and Canada as its top three suppliers, according to the most recent census data.

Trump made the threats in two posts on his Truth Social website late Monday as he spoke out against an influx of illegal migrants.

“On January 20th, as one of my first executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on ALL products coming into the United States and its ridiculous open borders,” he wrote, adding: “Thousands of people are pouring into Mexico and Canada, driving crime and drugs to unprecedented levels.”

He said the new tariffs will remain in place “until drugs, especially fentanyl and all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country!”

Trump also turned his attention to China, saying he “has had many discussions with China about the massive amounts of drugs, particularly fentanyl, being sent to the United States — but to no avail.”

“Until they stop, we will charge China an additional 10 percent tariff, on top of any additional tariff, on all of its products coming into the United States of America,” he wrote.

It remains uncertain whether Trump will follow through on his threats or simply use them as a negotiating ploy ahead of his inauguration in the new year.

Trump’s first day back in office

During his campaign for the presidency, Trump outlined several things he wanted to accomplish on his first day back in office, vowing to enact significant changes in key policy areas, including immigration, energy and foreign policy.

In recent months, Trump has made it clear that his approach to governing will be bold and immediate, declaring late last year that he would not rule as a dictator “except on Day 1.”

On Day 1, Trump said he promised to make immigration a central issue in his campaign, vowing to launch “the largest deportation program in American history” on his first day back in office.

Speaking at a rally in New York’s Madison Square Garden, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to rounding up and deporting millions of undocumented immigrants, especially those with criminal records.

“On Day 1, I’m going to launch the largest deportation program to get criminals out,” Trump told the crowd. “I will save every town and city that has been invaded and conquered, and we will put these vicious, bloodthirsty criminals in jail, then get the hell out of our country as quickly as possible.”
