Upland police recently shared video of an unusual arrest outside a shopping center over the weekend, where they learned a man brought his teenage stepson with him in a shoplifting spree.

In a statement, officers say they were proactively patrolling the Colonies Mall, located in the 1900 block of N. Campus Avenue, when they were approached by the loss prevention team at a Kohl’s store about a shoplifting that had just occurred .

Those team members pointed out a teenager to police, which led to his apprehension at the store.

“During this investigation, it was determined that the juvenile’s stepfather was loading a large amount of clothing into a bag and was leaving without paying from the same business,” Upland police said.

They say the man had no idea his stepson was detained when he left the store. There he was confronted by the waiting officers.

Instead of complying with their commands, the man tried to run. He was quickly attacked by the police.

They say the man stole nearly $900 worth of merchandise from the store and was a parolee with a parole violation warrant. He also had a separate warrant for assault with a deadly weapon.

Police say the man was taken to jail while his stepson was issued a summons and sent back home with his mother.
