Celebrity haunt closed amid ‘recent serious crime’ police investigation

Celebrity favorite The Groucho Club remains closed amid a police investigation into allegations of “a recent serious offence”.

The private members’ club in Soho, London, had its license temporarily suspended on Tuesday following a request from the Metropolitan Police.

Documents related to the licensing hearing, which would normally be available for public viewing, have been posted online, but most of the content has been redacted.

In a highly unusual move, the Metropolitan Police also refused to reveal any details of the charges beyond that they relate to claims of a recent serious offence.

It is understood that a police investigation is taking place was only revealed publicly because the force had to apply for the club’s license to be suspended.

The Groucho Club is one of London’s most famous private members clubs and has a long association with top celebrities.

It was originally established as a more relaxed alternative to traditional gentlemen’s clubs, and current members “should have a creative role in the creative industries and share the club’s maverick spirit,” according to the venue’s website.

“The suspension will take effect immediately and following an application by the Metropolitan Police Service on the grounds that the venue has breached its licensing conditions and was the scene of a recent serious crime.

“The investigation into that offense is ongoing and as a result there is a limit to the details that can be provided. The hearing was held in private for the same reason.

“Further details will be released when possible.”

The private members venue is understood to have co-operated with the council’s licensing sub-committee, acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and accepted the decision.

A council spokesman said: “This decision follows reports that a serious crime may have taken place at the premises in circumstances relating to a breach of the premises licence.

“The allegations are the subject of an ongoing police investigation and we are unable to comment further at this stage.”

The Groucho Club has been contacted for comment.
