Car crash is latest scary episode on Lewisham road where accidents are waiting to happen – South London News

A dramatic crash involving two cars somehow didn’t end with serious injuries – but a resident caught on camera says an accident is always waiting to happen on her street.

The incident happened at around 9.45pm on Saturday on the B2142 Drakefell Road, Lewisham.

A Met spokesman confirmed that no arrests had been made and no one was seriously injured.

The road runs parallel to the railway line between Nunhead and Brockley and has apparently been the subject of a fatality in the past.

Resident Emily Elkington said: “There are a lot of accidents on this very busy, narrow rat race. I have seen large trucks dump their loads attempting impossible turns when they realized their navigator had taken them to a width limiter.

“There are many residents who could share their own experiences of being run over. Me included. We’ve been campaigning for decades, but nothing ever changes.

“There are schools, parks, train stations and a lot of residents and pedestrians who use this road which is not suitable to take the high volume of traffic that is channeled on it. It’s a dangerous road.”

The Drakefell Road Action Group was set up three decades ago after a child was killed on the road to tackle the issue. Lewisham Council listened and built an apron in a particularly lethal spot and numerous attempts have been made by various residents over the years to make the road safer.

“Nothing substantial has happened in the 27 years I’ve been there,” Ms Elkington said. “A scratched zebra crossing at the far end of this long road must be 500 meters from the accident site.

“Other than that, just a few traffic islands with marker arrows on them always being hit by cars are few and far between. There are signs saying it’s a 20mph zone but I can’t see a single speed camera.

“I read somewhere that we had the highest volume of traffic of any B road in Lewisham. At least the A roads get more to the roadblocks and traffic lights.”

Lewisham Council has been contacted for comment.
