Infrabel deploys FSP 3000 S-Flex to enhance rail data network

Infrabel, Belgium’s national rail infrastructure operator, has deployed Adtranthe FSP 3000 S-Flex solution to increase its network capacity.

The 64 Gbit/s Fiber Channel (64GFC) over Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) solution is set to improve the rail operator’s data network. It will boost Belgium’s rail operations with scalable storage network (SAN) connectivity and high-throughput communications.

Arcadiz provided full services, from engineering and installation to round-the-clock support, contributing to the success of the implementation, the statement said.

The FSP 3000 S-Flex optical terminal supports a range of Fiber Channel speeds and connects Infrabel’s distributed data centers.

Using trunking technology, the solution aggregates multiple network interfaces, improving throughput to meet the high-speed requirements of Infrabel operations.

Infrabel ICT Head of Networks Alex Raviart said: “This upgrade represents a major leap forward in our storage network capabilities, significantly increasing data throughput and reliability to meet the growing demands of modern rail operations.

“It equips our network to handle the complexities of today’s digital landscape while providing a scalable infrastructure that connects data centers across multiple locations.”

The FSP 3000 S-Flex features built-in quantum encryption from Adva Network Security’s ConnectGuard, protecting data in transit between data centers against potential quantum computer attacks.

It is designed to support a wide range of DCI protocols and speeds, accommodating anything from 16 Gbit/s to 64 Gbit/s Fiber Channel as well as various Ethernet speeds.

The system’s 400 Gbit/s capacity and IBM Z connectivity services make it a suitable solution for DCI SANs, which are critical to data backup and disaster recovery strategies.

Adtran EMEA Sales General Manager Stuart Broome said: “The new Infrabel solution offers ultra-high capacity and low latency, ensuring optimal performance to meet the increasing demands of digital transformation.

“It also provides advanced security for SAN DCI requirements, including support for secure quantum encryption technology to protect data moving between data centers over the long term.”

In December 2023, Infrabel announced a 1 billion euro ($1.08 billion) loan. to finance its ten-year plan (2023-2032). The funds will increase capacity on major routes, including the Flemish corridor (Bruges-Ghent) and the Ottignies-Louvain route to Luxembourg.
