Kamala Harris admits election result ‘not what we wanted’

Tuesday (November 26), Vice President Kamala Harris made her first post-concession public address to supporters during a virtual call. Reflecting on the campaign, she encouraged listeners to remain hopeful and committed to their shared values, and emphasized that “the fight for their agenda didn’t end on November 5.” “The work I put in was about empowering people,” she said.

With the support of her running mate, the governor of Minnesota Tim WalzHarris acknowledged the disappointment of their defeat. “It feels hard,” she admitted. “I just have to remind you: don’t let anyone take your power away from you. You have the same power you had before (the result) and you have the same purpose you had.” Walz echoed his sentiments, saying, “We’re not confronting something. We are running after something. Honestly, it’s a little scary because there’s a very different vision that’s being presented there.”

The Harris-Walz ticket lost critical battleground states to the former president Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. JD Vance, and the GOP won decisive Electoral College and popular vote victories. “I know this is an uncertain time. I’m clear-eyed about it,” Harris remarked before reiterating the need to keep pushing. She wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

Harris, who replaced the President Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket in July, faced a challenging campaign. Concerns about Biden’s age and performance have grown since a June debate against Trump that paved the way for the former California senator to take over. She initially gained momentum with strong debate performances and endorsements from Democratic A-listers, many of whom sang or spoke at her rallies. However, her campaign appeared to struggle in its final weeks, with voters prioritizing issues such as the economy and immigration over her messaging about Trump as a threat to democracy.
