DepEd is probing the jamboree sighting incident

ILOILO City – The Department of Education (DepEd) Iloilo Schools Division executed legal proceedings against a teacher accused of voyeurism during the Iloilo Provincial Council Jamboree (Confesor) in Calinog.

“DepEd prioritizes the safety and well-being of learners and participants in all activities under its purview, and such behavior, if proven, is unequivocally condemned,” the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

The incident involved a 57-year-old teacher who allegedly glared at a 31-year-old female teacher in a makeshift bathroom at Camp Hinilawod on Monday.

Authorities said the teacher immediately called for help, which led to a citizen’s arrest of the teacher, who was later turned over to local police.

The suspect was charged with violating Republic Act 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act and was released on bail.

DepEd-Iloilo stressed that it does not undermine the incident and does not condone misconduct that could harm any of its employees.

“(We) are working in coordination with local authorities, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) and other relevant agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure accountability,” the agency added.

It also ensured the provision of psychosocial support for those affected and reiterated its zero tolerance policy against abuse, harassment and exploitation.

Meanwhile, Matt Palabrica, Iloilo Third District Board Member and BSP Council Chairman, condemned the incident and pointed out that it tarnished the integrity of the event.

The Legal Commission of the BSP Confessor Council is also conducting its investigation and will present its findings to the BSP National Council, which has authority over any disciplinary actions.
