The son of one of the victims painfully recounted the events leading up to the incident as he clearly remembered his last conversation with his mother on the fateful November 26.

Kelizi Silunjili said they agreed to accompany his mother to plow the next day because his sister was not feeling well and had to visit the hospital.

“My last conversation with her was yesterday before she died. I was at the farm with my mother while she weeded.

“I asked her to tell me who would accompany me to the farm the next day to plow, and I even suggested my sister, but she refused, saying that my sister was still young, and said that she would come with me” , he told.

Silunjili explained that he could see the rains about to fall and suggested he go home, but the woman insisted on finishing the part she had started pissing.

“The rains are coming and I told her I was going home and she insisted on finishing a small portion that was left with weeding. I left her and went home,” he added.

However, he was forced to take shelter in a structure his father had built when the rain started minutes later.

He explained that they took shelter there with his family until they heard a child crying alone outside.

“I heard a child crying in the distance; after taking a look, i saw my little sister running for shelter in tears. She said our mother is lying on the ground,” he said.

The young man remembers running to where he left his mother only to find her and his aunt lying on the ground.

“My father arrived at the scene and was stunned not knowing what to do. An uncle came and organized how the bodies would be transported from the site,” he added.

Lightning strikes five family members in Nakuru
