RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – Cold weather is upon us and Pennington County Search and Rescue is working hard to keep people out of harm’s way once winter outdoor activities begin.

Gretchen Emerick of PennCo Search and Rescue has some tips you should know before you hit the slopes, trails or roads.

The most important tip is to be aware of your weather. Look ahead to the days you plan to be out and plan accordingly. This may mean packing extra layers, wearing appropriate footwear and keeping extra supplies in the car.

Then keep a satellite radio on you, as the Black Hills can have spotty cell phone service. Make sure friends and family know when you’re leaving, when you plan to return, and where you’re going.

Finally, if you’re in an unexpected emergency, don’t leave your car or the area you’re stuck in. Keep as many layers of clothing as possible to prevent frostbite and stay hydrated.
