What College Football Playoff Chairman Ashton Jeanty had to say about Boise State

For the second week in a row, Boise State moved up the College Football Playoff rankings.

The Broncos (10-1, 7-0 Mountain West Conference), who were ranked 12th a week ago, moved up to 11th when the latest rankings they were released Tuesday evening. Once again seeded above every Big 12 team, Boise State has a clear path to secure a first-round bye in the 12-team playoff.

The 13-man committee did not penalize the Broncos for struggling in last week’s road game against Wyoming. Boise State needed a touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull away with a 17-13 win against the Cowboys (2-9, 2-5) at War Memorial Stadium.

After Tuesday’s rankings were released, College Football Playoff committee chairman Warde Manuel sat down with reporters for a question-and-answer session and credited the Broncos for getting a win.

“Well, they won, and we cherish the win,” Manuel said. “We appreciate the way the teams play and in the end the scoreboard counts. What they’ve done, the only loss they’ve had, as you know, is a very close three-point loss at Oregon earlier in the year, and they’ve run the tables ever since.

“We have some people on the committee who played at Wyoming when they were coaches, and they really say it’s a tough environment to play in. Obviously, Wyoming gave Boise State a great game, but Boise State won.”

Here are the highlights from Manuel’s press availability.

“For us, Jeanty was amazing, beyond 2,000 yards rushing. He seems to have some injuries to deal with, but he went hard and won the games. We think highly of Boise State and will continue to watch them.”

“Again, I can’t project what will happen and how the committee will look. I think we’re going to assess – well, I know we’re going to assess the outcome of these games this week and the championship games and rank the teams accordingly based on how they perform and if they want to – how they’re going to move. As you could see from this week, some teams lost five, six, seven, nine places. You had teams that went up three, four or five places. It just depends on the outcome of the games as we evaluate it.”

“Well, Arizona State had two great wins against two ranked opponents in Kansas State and BYU. As you know, Tulane currently plays Kansas State as their only ranked opponent and lost to Kansas State earlier in the year, but they have played very well since their two losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma. I felt like Arizona State was playing at a level that put them ahead of Tulane, but as you can see, they’re a long way from each other, so we think very highly of both of them.”
