Tokay High School teacher accused of sexually assaulting a minor released from jail without bail

A Tokay high school teacher accused of sexually assaulting a minor has been released from the San Joaquin County Jail without having to post bail, court records show.

Sean Sorbera, 23, is charged unlawful sexual intercourse, dissuading a witness from reporting a crime, contacting a minor for a sexual offense, arranging to appear on a date with a minor to engage in lewd and lascivious behavior, and disturbing or molesting a child under 18, according to a criminal complaint filed in San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Prosecutors claim that the crimes took place between March 1, 2023 and October 18, 2024.

Sorbera, a teacher for the Lodi Unified School District, was arrested Oct. 31 following an investigation by the Lodi Police Department. He was booked into the Lodi City Jail.

Sorbera, who was in custody at the time, made his first appearance Nov. 4 in San Joaquin County Superior Court. He was arraigned on three felony counts and one misdemeanor.

According to court documents, Deputy Prosecutor Victor Bachand objected to Sorbera being released on her own recognizance during the hearing. Judge John Soldati, however, granted the request that Sorbera be released on preventive supervision.

A GPS device was to be installed at the jail before Sorbera’s release, court documents show.

In addition, a criminal protection order was issued prohibiting the defendant from communicating with the 15-year-old victim. The order requires the defendant to stay at least 100 meters away from the victim and her home, workplace and car. He must also stay away from all parks, playgrounds and schools and cannot leave the state without court permission.
