In 2002, a man and a woman met, dated briefly, and then broke up within a year.

Fifteen years later, they crossed paths again as married men and women—with their individual partners.

They began a two-year extramarital affair that eventually left one of them permanently scarred and the other facing a lawsuit.

Singaporean man Chong Shiong Hui attacked the woman with a knife and a chopper after she asked to end the relationship.

On 28 November 2024, five years after the attack, Chong pleaded guilty to attempted murder, with two additional counts of mischief to be considered during sentencing.

The business

Chong, 45, and the victim, 43, initially met in 2002.

According to court documents seen by Mothershipthey reconnected in August 2017 and resumed their fun despite being married to other people.

The victim’s husband discovered the affair in November 2018.

A year later, in November 2019, the victim decided to end the relationship.

She texted Chong on November 28, 2019, telling him she “wanted to take a break from their relationship.”

Angry at the breakup

Enraged, Chong threatened to harm the victim, her family or himself within the next two days.

He had planned to “force her to change her mind and kill her if she didn’t,” the prosecution said.

Even after spending a night out drinking with his wife on November 29, he continued to send threatening messages to the victim, claiming he was making her a “widow”.

He then fell asleep after taking two tablets of Stilnox (zolpidem) – a drug used to treat insomnia.

I prepared a chopper and two petrol twins

The next day, on November 3, Chong went to the victim’s house in the early hours of the morning after she did not answer his call.

He brought with him a helicopter, as well as two cans of gasoline, cigarettes and a lighter.

Not wanting the victim’s husband to follow him, he deflated the tires of her husband’s cars when he arrived at her apartment.

Meanwhile, he got drunk by sipping from a bottle of brandy mixed with water.

Chong approached the victim’s unit and tried to get their attention by turning off the main switchboard.

However, no one answered him.

Finally, he returned to the car and fell asleep after sipping again from the brandy bottle.

Around 7am, he continued his behavior, going up to the apartment and calling the victim and her husband.

The victim’s husband saw Chong through the window and told him he would call the police.

Chong eventually left after the husband said the victim was not there.

Throughout the morning, Chong continued to send her harassing messages, including one that read: “I will kill anyone who stands in my way.”

At 9:07 a.m., he sent a picture of the gas cans and the helicopter, with a warning message: “I put this outside your house.”

The victim eventually told Chong to stop threatening her and arranged to meet at his parents’ house, intending to ask the parents to “control” Chong.

He cut it

At around 1pm later in the day, Chong went to his parents’ house and waited for the victim.

He placed a six-inch kitchen knife and a chopper on a table on the car’s porch and lay in wait.

When the victim arrived, she asked to speak outside the front gate, but Chong pulled her inside and closed the gate.

He grabbed the chopper and swung it at her as they argued.

Chong ended up swinging the helicopter and cut the victim on her upper right forearm, even commenting that the helicopter was blunted.

He threw the chopper at her again, severing her forearms and head.

The victim screamed as he crouched and turned.

Chong continued to cut her, this time on the thigh.

The victim asked if she could talk and they continued to argue about why the victim had to end the relationship.

At this point, Chong dropped the helicopter due to the victim’s struggle, and the victim kicked him.

Chong went to get the kitchen knife and the victim ran away from him into the garden area.

“Let’s Die Together”

However, he managed to catch up with the victim, grabbed her by the throat and asked her if she had ever loved him.

The victim said yes.

Chogn then told her, “Let’s die together” in Mandarin, but the victim replied that she did not want to die with him.

He then attempted to stab the victim in the neck and chest, but the victim avoided this by turning around, causing him to slash her in the back and back of the head several times.

A neighbor eventually heard the victim scream, “Help me!” and I saw her defend herself with a pot of flowers.

Chong continued to attack the victim, undeterred even when he managed to get him to drop the kitchen knife.

He dropped his chopper, dropped a kitchen knife and found a saw

He found a hacksaw lying on the car’s porch area and picked it up with the intention of cutting the victim again.

Despite the victim begging him to stop, he tried to swing the hand saw.

He put it down only after finding it too cumbersome.

At this point, Chong’s parents returned home and were informed by another neighbor that their son was “chopping a woman” in their house.

When the parents opened the gate, the victim took the opportunity to escape.

He found his helicopter again

However, Chong managed to pick up the helicopter and slashed her back again.

The impact of contact with the victim’s back was so strong that the helicopter fell to the ground.

The victim managed to run away, shouting to the neighbors to call the police.

Chong gave chase and caught up with the victim, grabbing her and causing her to fall.

He struck the victim’s body several times, including on the head and back, while she was struggling on the ground.

He only stopped when his 72-year-old mother caught up with him and asked him to stop.

Then he assisted the victim.

custody

Police finally arrived around 1:39 p.m. and found the victim covered in blood, accompanied by Chong’s mother.

Chong walked towards them, and the victim identified him as the aggressor.

He was arrested around 2.20pm and was found to be intoxicated at the time of the offence.

The scars left on the victim

The victim was left with serious injuries that put her on hospital leave for two months.

She sustained minimal displaced skull fractures as well as multiple lacerations (1 cm to 11 cm) throughout her upper body, including her scalp, forearms, ear, neck, chest, flank and fingers.

She also suffered permanent disfigurement in terms of scarring and scalp alopecia from the scalp lacerations she received.

According to a coroner cited by the prosecution, Chong’s assault was “very dangerous” in the sense that there was a real and serious potential risk of causing loss of body parts and death.

The prosecution said the victim “truly believed he was going to die there and then”.

The victim suffered flashbacks of the “torturous experience” for about 1.5 years, which disturbed her sleep and made her feel tired and moody during the day.

Worried about a potential revenge plot against them, her family eventually moved.

She also faced inconvenience in her job with the client as a manager due to numerous scars on her back, arms and hand.

accused

Chong was seen by a psychiatrist at the Institute of Mental Health and was found likely to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs (Stilnox) at the time of the offence, which can lead to impaired judgment and self-control.

However, he had no underlying alcohol or substance use disorder or mental disorder.

He was also not of unsound mind at the time of the alleged offence.

Calling the attack “sustained” and “vicious”, the prosecution said it demonstrated Chong’s blatant disregard for human life.

They called for 16 to 18 years in prison and five to six strokes of the cane for Chong.

His sentencing is scheduled for December 6, 2024.
