Delhi’s Prashant Vihar blast: ‘lightly packed’ explosives similar to those used in CRPF school case

Preliminary analysis of explosives found at the Prashant Vihar blast site in Delhi suggests that similar explosives were used in the blast at a CRPF school in October this year. Sources told CNN-News18 that in both cases, hydrogen peroxide appears to be the main ingredient used.

The incident took place in front of Bansi sweets at 11:48 a.m., after which fire crews were dispatched to the scene.

“Traces of hydrogen peroxide were found…a vial of sulfur compound was also found at the scene. Further tests will tell us if there were other explosives in the mix,” an official privy to the forensic reports told News18.

Cordtex, a detonating wire used in mining, was most likely used to set off the explosives, officials said. Cordtex can be ignited remotely and burns slowly like the tip of a firecracker before reaching the explosives and setting off an explosion.

As in the CRPF school blast, no shrapnel was found in this case either. The explosives, officials said, were “lightly packed.”

“No container or bag was found. The explosives damaged the headquarters of the beat, but the intensity was so low that even the tire of the beat remained unscathed,” said an official of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The nearby wall did not develop any cracks nor were the windows of nearby shops shattered. The pace driver, however, suffered minor injuries.

Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby cameras to look for any suspicious activity. NSG and NIA are assisting Delhi Police with investigation.

So far, no leads have emerged in the CRPF school blast case. Sources from the Forensic Science Laboratory told the ANI news agency that the material used in the explosion resembled a crude bomb.
