PARIS — Yannick Noah, the 1983 French Open champion, was named Thursday as the new head of paratennis in France starting next year.

The French Tennis Federation announced in a statement that Noah will be responsible for coordinating wheelchair, visually impaired tennis activities, as well as tennis activities for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Noah had his first experience with disability tennis during the summer when he led the French men’s wheelchair tennis team at the Paris Paralympics.

“His main role will be to continue structuring the paratennis department by leading the training and ‘high level’ strategy and supporting the development of all paratennis activities throughout the country,” the French tennis federation said.
