Kochi: The catering unit in Kochi has been shut down by the municipality following a food poisoning incident involving students of a special school on a recreational trip. The Food Safety Department has revoked the license of the establishment identified as Lillie’s Kitchen in Ernakulam North.

Meanwhile, the Department of Food Safety clarified that the boat used for the trip was not authorized to distribute food. A notice was also issued for the vessel. The Department of Food Safety advised that the boat did not have adequate facilities for storing food and other related services, which led to the issuance of the advisory. If the response is unsatisfactory, further action may be taken, he added.

The group, consisting of 104 people, including students, teachers, parents and caretakers of Karunyatheeram Special School in Kattipara Panchayat of Kozhikode, came to Ernakulam for a leisure trip.

It was earlier suspected that the food they consumed on the boat led to food poisoning. After eating, they had stomach cramps followed by vomiting. As a result, 85 people, including students and caretakers, sought treatment at Kolenchery Medical College late on Wednesday evening.

Lillie’s Kitchen’s license was suspended due to unsanitary conditions, including the way food was prepared.
Following the incident, the Food Safety Department is currently conducting inspections at various catering establishments in Kochi.
