Malcolm Grout’s Lake District paraglider has died accidentally

Mr. Grout’s canopy collapsed and he died instantly from multiple injuries sustained when he fell into the rock.

A rescue team dispatched to the scene reported finding Mr Grout’s helmet about 100 meters from him.

An investigation by the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association found that Mr Grout’s equipment was not a factor in the tragedy.

It had been turbulent air at the time and experienced an “asymmetrical collapse”.

Even if an emergency parachute had been fitted, successful deployment may not have been possible.

Mr Grout, who was born in Birmingham and lived in Guisborough before moving to Cumbria, was a “friend to many”, the coroner said.

Mrs Gomersal, who also paid tribute to the rescuers, added: “I have no doubt he will be sorely missed, not only by his family but also by the flying community.”
