Gregg Wallace quits MasterChef amid ‘allegations’

13 people made complaints against him

Today, it was reported Greg Wallace has pulled out of presenting MasterChef as the BBC conducts an investigation into “historical allegations”. The host has previously been accused of inappropriate sexual comments.

As the BBC investigates, Wallace is said to be “co-operating” but said the claims are “completely false”. Charges were made against 13 people who worked with him on a series of shows over a 17-year period.

Apparently BBC News sent a letter Tuesday to Wallace’s representatives outlining the allegations. Wallace’s lawyers said it was “completely false that he is engaging in sexually harassing behaviour”.

So what do we know about the allegations made against Gregg Wallace so far?

Gregg Wallace's MasterChef allegations

The allegations against Gregg Wallace came from 13 people he worked with on various shows over the course of 17 years. The claims span five shows, from 2005 to 2022. The claims say Wallace would make “sexualized” jokes, talk openly about his sex life and one claim said he took off his top in front of a female co-worker.

He was said to have told the colleague he wanted to “give her a fashion show” and said he was not wearing boxers under his trousers.

Kirsty Wark, who was a Celebrity MasterChef contestant in 2011, claimed she told “sexualised” jokes during filming. She claimed that this happened in front of the cast and crew.

Gregg Wallace has quit MasterChef

Announcing the investigation, MasterChef production company Banijay UK said in a statement: “This week the BBC received complaints from individuals about historical allegations of misconduct while working with presenter Gregg Wallace on one of our shows.

“Although these complainants have not raised allegations directly with our show producers or parent company Banijay UK, we feel it is appropriate to carry out an immediate external review to fully and impartially investigate. While this review is underway, Gregg Wallace will step down from his role on MasterChef and is committed to co-operating fully throughout the process.

“Banijay UK’s duty of care to staff is always a priority and our expectations of behavior are made clear to both the cast and production team, with multiple ways to raise concerns, including anonymously, clearly advertised on set. While these are historical allegations, incidents brought to our attention where these expectations are not met are thoroughly investigated and dealt with appropriately.”

The statement added, “If anyone wants to talk to us or raise issues or concerns, then they can confidently contact speakupbanijayuk.com.”

A BBC spokesman said: “We take any issue raised with us seriously and have robust processes in place to resolve it. We are always clear that any behavior that falls below the standards expected by the BBC will not be tolerated.

“Where an individual is contracted directly by an external manufacturing company, we share any complaints or concerns with that company and will always support them when we address them.”

Gregg Wallace denied the claims.
